His name is Millard Leland, and he specializes in a sort of improvised piano music. According to this documentary he lives in Mexico. Ive never heard of him but he reminds me of a few of the more out there composers that I have listened to.

I love his piece March of the Windmills. Im not sure whether this is all a joke or not. But if he really plays something like that for people then that's pretty awesome.

Site for Composer Jobs

Any music composers or producers out there should take a look at this posting site for composer jobs. They post free listings of people who are working on a film and need someone to score it. It looks like a number of them are unpaid, which is to be expected, but some of them are also for money so that is good.

This is why it is important to have good quality work to show and why you should limit what you release to only your best stuff. You never know who might be looking around and if you have some mediocre work out there it will not make a good impression in this highly competitive world. It points out how whether anyone likes it or not, downloading music both legally and otherwise has become part of reality and it won't change. With this in mind composers need to figure out ways to offer their music for free and still make money for it.

This is not impossible. Many industries work on models of providing free service and make money from advertising or something like that. Or they provide certain services for free and others for a fee. Music producers need to start experimenting around with these models because it is too impractical to try and keep people from getting your music for free anyway.

Its true that less popular bands may be able to sell their work more effectively because it cant be found on torrent sites, but there are also increased benefits of dissemination when offering music for free. The bottom line is that a creative approach should be taken to selling music that should include some aspect of giving some of it away for free.

Music Site for Media Producers

This isn't about an article, but it is about a new site that should be of interest to any music or video producers. It is called free use music, and it is a nice way of getting together some free legal music downloads that people can use in films or animations and stuff like that.

This is how it works: music producers can submit certain songs of theirs to be listed on the site. This will get them some free exposure from the site itself, but it will also get their music in video projects which can also spread the word about their art. Video producers can search the site for the free music and use it in projects as long as they credit the composers. There are no royalties or legal complications at all, which makes this ideal for people needing music for student projects or other things with low budgets.

This site should be a good thing for both music and media professionals and students, so we are happy to help promote it. Check it out when you get the chance and if you have some music laying around that you made and never did anything with, think about submitting it to the site.

Playing Music For Free

Playing music out on the streets somewhere, also known as busking, can be a nice experience for a musician, and not enough people try it out. Not only can you spend some time getting better at performance, and just generally enjoy yourself, but you can even make some money in the process.

There are a few things to worry about though. You are going to want to make sure that none of your stuff gets stolen, so you might want to have someone there with you. And you should try to do it in a generally safe area. But other than that, you should make some nice cash while doing what you love.

Keep in mind that people will like to hear music that they know, and this will lead to more tips, but it can also be great to just improvise or play an original piece.

Too many musicians try to get paid gigs that may be hard to come by, or want to entertain themselves by going out to some club that costs money. What you should be looking to do is enjoy yourself for free. Many of the best activities for humans should not really cost anything. There are a lot of problems with the way that most people approach the subject, according to this article on learning by improvisation at least. It brings up some good points about playing music as opposed to being able to compose and improvise it. Far fewer people have a handle on how to compose their own music, and this might have something to do with the way that they are taught.

Depending on the instrument you play, you may never be introduced to more improvisational based musical aspects, and that is a shame because that is where a lot of the most rewarding aspects of music can occur. The type of structured creativity and productivity that comes from a more compositional based music learning could be very good for the status of music in society, and could really be great for the people practicing it.

Philosophy and Music

Philosophy is something that is very much tied to music. This article covers the formation of the twelve intervals that make up western music theory and how they were thought of in some nice detail.

It mentions the terta chords that the Greeks used as the first chords in music and how this system was much more flexible than the earlier babylonian system of music that could not be adopted and changed into as many different forms. The inherent flexibility of the western music system developed by the Greeks is probably the reason that it is still around today and more widespread and entrenched than ever. In fact, some may say that the system has been too successful, but thats a discussion for another day.

Article on Greek Music History

There is a nice article about the history of music in ancient greek to be found right here: ancient greek music. One of the main points is what niche marketing your music can do for you, and without a doubt, this is very important. In order to get noticed in the vast online world, you will need to aim your efforts at a specific topic rather than compete with general keywords. It can be impossible to have a good marketing effect without niche targeting, so get to know it.

Middle Age Guitar Music In Video Comic

For those who have not seen this video comic, it features some great middle age guitar or lute music in every episode. This article goes into detail about what sounds like a more flexible and musical approach to scales that could even apply to other instruments just as well. When learning these types of things, it is important to have the right philosophy or else you could end up wasting a lot of time in the end, or even do irreversible damage to your musicality by getting to boxed into a certain way of looking at things. The article makes the point that the guitar is an instrument of many possibilities and many different ways of playing the same things. To make the fretboard into a series of rigid patterns will destroy a lot of what the guitar can allow you to do. The first talks about interval theory on guitar. This type of method for learning the instrument can be very helpful in teaching people a more internalized and ear-oriented way of playing. In the short run, the article points out that this method will take more work and require more patience from the student, but in the long run it will lead to a more flexible understanding of the guitar that will allow the student to explore any style of music to its fullest.

The second article is more about how the internet can help music teachers in general by providing resources and adding to what can be taught in a lesson. There is a great wealth of information on the web that can and should be used by music teachers as a supplemental resource. The internet may very well allow people to be able to do this for now on, so that is pretty exiting. This is what I would consider the best possible option for musicians out there who may not know exactly how to sell their music at the moment. Guitar is one of the harder instruments to read music on and many people struggle with it for some time before becoming adept.

One of the reasons that guitar sight reading is so difficult is that there are many different place to play most notes on the instrument, as the article states. It's a virtual sound studio that can make some great sounding music for a much lower cost than normal recording studios. They point out how their process does not include a lot of costs that other studios have with real instruments and equipment. This is an interesting idea that may prove to be more popular in the future. Technology has made it pretty easy to get high quality sounds from much cheaper means, and this studio is taking advantage of that.

Music Review Article

This is an interesting article about the point of music reviews. Many people consider reviews to be useless criticism, but criticism is never useless if it is logical and well founded. Critics can help us save time and money by not going out to bad movies and not buying bad albums. Besides this, the article goes into depth about some of the more subtle importances of a music critic. They do not just exist to insult people or make fun, so you should make sure to find a good one and let them see the bad art for you while steering you towards the good.

Site About Electronic Instrumental Music

There is a new blog being started about electronic instrumental music that I thought people here would like to know about. This is an emerging art form that is a basic combination of instrumental music consisting of traditional instruments with the addition of electronic music elements. This is not necessarily a new idea, but it is something that has yet to be developed to its fullest.

With the use of modern electronic equipment and music production techniques, instrumental music can be taken to a new level. But many people still love the sound of more traditional instruments, and indeed, most electronic synths can still not match the complexity of a flute's sound for example. The solution to this for many composers has, and will continue to be, instrumental electronic music.

How to Learn Music Article

This article goes over something very important for those who are learning how to play an instrument. Improvisation can be the best way for a lot of people looking for a more musical approach. The article is specifically about learning how to play music with improvisation, and it talks about the different techniques and methods of improv that can benefit your playing. Most people use a more constrained method of learning that includes playing scales and learning patterns. This type of philosophy will help you get some skill actually working the instrument, but it will not be developing your ear, and that is the most important part.

You do not always want to be thinking while playing an instrument, but you do always want to be listening, and improv helps you stay in that mode.

Composers and selling music articles

Some great articles about being a composer and selling your music online have recently been published, and I would like to talk about them in this post. The first is about selling music online and the different approaches you can take with this subject. Selling music through the web will become a more and more important thing as time goes on, and more and more people will be able to do it as it becomes cheaper to produce music and get a website going. Composers should start to think about new ways to sell their music online so that they can keep the profits and use the money to continue their art. A ton of work goes into making all of the sound for a film, and by the end, every single thing that you hear has been modified and adjusted in some way. There are people behind this in a number of positions, and its cool to see that the internet allows some of them to put their services forward on an individual basis, like this freelance sound designer. With the increased demands of film and video production these days, sound work should increase in need as well, and more sound experts will be able to find freelance work like this.

It will be interesting to see how freelance composers and sound designers continue to work in the future and how the industry evolves as a whole. This is interesting because it talks about how the more popular styles and systems of music can be seen as the more effective, as they have been naturally selected to thrive and spread. Although the article is not exactly the most developed on the issue, it points out some interesting things about how western pop music in general has been spreading around the world, and that obviously must speak to its effectiveness as music. You see it taking over in places that had much different music systems and styles, but the western system is more able to produce music that people like.

Music Article on John Cage

This is an interesting music article on John Cage, and specifically, his composition 4'33. The article makes the case that this composition is not actually music, which should seem so absurd. To say that john cage's 4'33 is not music should be pretty clear, but an entrenchment in the ivory tower of music education has made it controversial to call four minutes of silence anything but music. This article dispels all of those notions and cuts through to the truth of the matter; that non music is not music.

People should realize what the purpose of music is and seek to fulfill that purpose with actual content, not the absence of it. I am glad that someone is standing up to the subjectivism in art and defending its true nature.

Sight Reading Article

This is an article that has several tips for reading guitar music. The first is a video about guitar warm ups. It will show you how to warm your fingers up when starting a practice or playing session on guitar. This is an important thing to do to ensure that you dont injure your fingers over time.

The next video is about alternate picking, which is a very important part of playing the guitar. This method of picking will allow you to get the most out of the motion of your fingers, which means that you can play as fast as possible. Also, this method gives you more control over your picking and enables you to accent notes in a way that is nearly impossible with other picking methods. Once you have this method down, you will greatly increase your command of the guitar.

Film Composer Music Article

Just a quick word about this site that lets you submit music reviews. This is a simple aspect of free markets. If the makers of music videos can profit from having them on YouTube, they will have an incentive to make more of them and put more of them on the site for people to enjoy. The article talks about how instrumental music composers can use characteristics of pop music to make their instrumental music appeal to more people. This can be a great thing as more composers should try to take advantage of the facts that make pop music well liked and apply them to their music. This site should be of interest to anyone seeking to become a video game composer. It is interesting to think about how video game music has developed over the years from its start on popular games like mario. Now it is very advanced and rivals film music in many ways. There are even a lot of film composers doing work for video games these days.

Video games present a few different challenges for composers of music. Unlike a film, game music can come at different times during a game and can be affected by the players actions. You also cannot predict what sort of sound effects might be happening during the music. The normal jazz guitar tone may be giving way to more experimentation, and this should be a good thing.

Guitar Articles Site

There is a new guitar articles site that a friend of mine is starting. It will function in the same way that this site does, in that it will gather and organize into one place many of the great guitar articles that can be found online. Much like what this site does with music articles, the amount of guitar information online needs to be condensed somehow, and this new blog is going to do that. Anyone trying to learn how to play guitar should consider this one of their top sources, because each article that is posted on the site will have been checked for accuracy and value. Check it out if you are looking for some more guitar related information.

Video Guitar Lessons Site

This is a new lessons site that I have found that should gather some good material for guitar players. This is basically a style of film that is based around music. Shapes, colors, and images are used to highlight and work with the music chosen for the video. These are a little different from music videos, which should tend to have more performance video or an actual storyline. Visual music must be devoid of these aspects to be considered different.

One of the artists that I noticed was Mike Farkas, who uses mainly old film footage to construct visual music videos. Quick cuts are his primary tool to match the rhythm of the music, but the images chosen for the visuals also help bring forth the general feeling of the music. It will be interesting to see how this relatively new form of media develops in the future.

Article on Orchestral Electronic Music

This is an interesting look at orchestral electronic music, a new style of music that has arisen from the combination of others. The first one deals with overdrive pedals in jazz guitar. Jazz is a genre of music that can greatly benefit from the increase use of overdrive pedals as the article points out. This may be very true, as it draws in people more familiar with rock guitar styles.

The next one is about practicing guitar with a distortion pedal. The great thing about the interval method of guitar playing is that you will have a much more flexible understanding of the guitar. This site will have information, reviews, and articles about instrumental music, and that is a good thing. The reason this site is different is that it focuses on independent instrumental music artists out there making their own music and trying to promote it on the internet. This type of music does not get a lot of publicity so these musicians could use a site like this. Hopefully people begin to take advantage of this site and use it to promote their music, it could be a great tool for any independent artists out there. This can be important for anyone who is thinking about buying a new guitar but may not have the money to spend on a very nice one. New guitars can cost a lot of money, but if you spend your money on an older guitar and then upgrade its parts you can save a lot in the end.

By getting a guitar with a solid body that does not cost a lot, you can then replace all of the parts with better wooden guitar parts, after this, replacing the pickups will fix any sound issues with the instrument. There are many times during practice when you will want to have a purely clean tone.

One More Guitar Sight Reading Article

Just a quick addition to my recent post about guitar sight reading. I found another article about the benefits of guitar sight reading that goes along with the other and I think it has some more valuable information. Check it out if you get the chance. One thing to remember with sight reading on the guitar is that you have to essentially learn it a couple different times to be able to sight read around the entire fretboard. This can make it something challenging to learn but the key is to stick with a normal practice routine. Consistency is the key thing, its better to practice it once a day for a short time than a long session every once and a while.

Music and Film Articles and News Site

There is another blog I just found that is on a similar topic and should provide good information. It focuses on internet music and film. They will have topics about how film and music are becoming more important aspects of the internet, and also how the internet is becoming more important to them as far as marketing and sales. They will probably have some information about film music seeing as how thats a logical combination of what they discuss.

The internet has become very important to all kinds of media. In fact, there may not be any newpapers around any more because of it. I think this is a good thing though. The advancement of music and video on the internet means for artistic and idealistic freedom. Its important that media on the web continues to develop and that it remains uncensored.

Guitar Sight Reading Music Articles

These are some good articles about guitar sight reading. This is an aspect of guitar playing that has been ignored by many players, and this may be something they should reconsider. The first article, the importance of guitar sight reading, states many reasons why sight reading can improve your playing in unexpected ways. It is more than just being able to read music, it can help you understanding and internalization of music theory.

The other article talks specifically about how to sight read guitar chords. This is one of the hardest apects of sight reading, in that you have to deal with many different notes at once. The article makes a great point about how the human brain cannot recognize that many units of information quickly enough, and in order to be able to play the chord, you have to look at it as one unit. Check out the link for more about this, there is a lot to go over.
